Job Description:

We are seeking a Renewable Energy Projects Specialist who will lead and contribute to project development, management, and analysis to support the realisation and optimal operations of our renewable energy projects.     

This is an exciting position that will see you join a highly specialised Carbon Neutrality & Innovation team here at Anglo American, who are working closely with our operations and in joint-venture with an Energy Partner to implement renewable energy at the sites in Southern Africa.

Core Responsibilities (amongst others): 

  • Participate in the site selection process for renewable energy sites. 
  • Identify key risks and realistic mitigations related to a site or technology. 
  • Review and interrogate technical designs ensuring they are appropriate for the stage of development, meet the project objectives and comply with the relevant technical standards. 
  • Manage RFIs with external parties.  
  • Resolve discrepancies or ambiguities in engineering design, assumptions, specifications etc. 
  • Integrate the social, technical, environmental, permitting, land and health and safety workstreams in the development of the project. 
  • Prepare and/or review (as relevant) engineering specifications and employer’s requirements for equipment supply and/or construction contracts.  
  • Actively seek appropriate solutions to project challenges and present them to the relevant stakeholders for decision-making. 
  • Coordinate technical, environmental, and social due diligence of potential project acquisitions. 
  • Lead the application process for Eskom cost estimate letters/ CEL-PRO on behalf of the project.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in engineering or equivalent 
  • ECSA registered Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist 
  • Strong, relevant experience in a related field of engineering and/or project management 
  • Sound knowledge of project engineering related to solar PV and wind energy developments; battery storage knowledge advantageous. 
  • Contextual knowledge of the commercial structuring of renewable energy projects  
  • Procurement and construction norms related to renewable energy project development. 
  • Knowledge of best practices in respect of project management 
  • Proficient: Implementing the OHSA in project design/development & construction
