Foreign students who are new to the University of Waikato and who will be enrolled in face-to-face courses there in 2023 are encouraged to apply for the Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship.

After years of active lobbying by a group of Hamilton residents who were keen to establish a university in their city, the University of Waikato finally opened its doors in 1964. Facilities were initially lacking, but in early 1965, new structures were formally inaugurated by the governor-general at the time, Sir Bernard Fergusson. Vice-Chancellor Sir Don Llewellyn served as the first.

The university with the quickest growth rate in New Zealand by the 1980s was Waikato. In 1987, the thriving Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences was promoted to a School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences due to the growing popularity of computer science as a field of study.

The University and its neighboring teachers’ college have always had a close relationship, and the two institutions combined to form the first university in New Zealand, paving the way for others to follow. The University started to establish a presence in Tauranga through its teaching programs.

The Kngitanga and Waikato-Tainui, who are the traditional proprietors and custodians of the Waikato region, have a long-standing association with the University of Waikato. The Ngti Wairere and Ngti Hau of Tainui once lived on the site where the University’s Hamilton campus now stands. Following the Waikato Land Wars, the colonial government took over a large portion of this territory in 1864, a move that was later deemed to violate the Treaty of Waitangi.
