A hair stylist is a cosmetology professional who specializes in cutting, dyeing and styling clients’ hair. They may specialize in particular hair textures, cuts or colors. For example, some hair stylists focus on helping clients go blonde or maintain their already blonde hair by applying highlights, lowlights and other color treatments. Hair stylists collaborate with their clients to learn about their unique style and find a cut or color that complements their face shape.

They may recreate styles based on reference photos customers bring to them or advise their clients on looks that can help them enhance their natural features.

1. Attend cosmetology school or another professional training program

If you want to become a hair stylist, you can begin by attending a cosmetology school or other professional training program that provides you with the knowledge and skills required for this role. To qualify for these programs, schools typically require you to have a high school diploma or GED. In cosmetology school, you can expect to learn how to color, cut and style a variety of hair textures and lengths by working directly with clients under the supervision of a trained professional. You may also learn about cutting hair according to clients’ specific facial structures and concepts related to your role, including color theory. Your coursework may include classes such as:

  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Business fundamentals
  • Customer service
  • Marketing
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Sanitation
  • Styling techniques
  • Critical thinking and analysis: As a hair stylist, clients may rely on you to give them advice regarding the right cut or color for their face shape or hair texture, which may require you to use critical thinking skills to make a helpful suggestion. Analytical thinking can allow you to consider all the client’s options and preferences and make a choice that suits their personal style.
  • Dexterity and physical stamina: Since your role may require you to use your hands and stand for hours at a time, dexterity and physical stamina are important skills. They can help you ensure that you still cut or color hair with precision and accuracy when working with multiple clients for a long period of time and that you have energy and enthusiasm throughout the day.

In addition to your cosmetology degree, employers require hair stylists to have state-issued licensure to cute and style hair professionally. Other than your classroom training, many states require prospective hair stylists to gain hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed hair stylists. These training hours allow you to complete a variety of role-related tasks, including shampooing and conditioning and learn from experienced hair stylists by observing them cut and style hair and interact with their clients
