World Bank Scholarship Program for Developing Nations [2025]

World Bank Scholarships

World Bank, or International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), was established in 1944 by western powers at a United Nations conference in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The bank’s original purpose was to help rebuild Europe and Japan after World War II. The World Bank’s mission is to reduce global poverty and build shared prosperity by providing loans, guarantees, and advisory services to developing countries. The bank also works with the public and private sectors to coordinate responses to global challenges.

The World Bank became a formal organization on December 27, 1946, after the Bretton Woods agreements were ratified internationally. It began operations on June 25, 1946, and approved its first loan on May 9, 1947, to France for postwar reconstruction. The loan was worth $250 million, which is the largest loan the bank has ever issued in real terms.

The World Bank is run like a cooperative, with its members serving as shareholders. The bank’s work is constantly evolving to respond to economic challenges, and it has expanded its reach to almost every developing country in the world. The World Bank also has an institute that offers training to government officials through local research and teaching institutions.
