PEPSICO South Africa

PepsiCo Positive is a strategic end-to-end transformation with sustainability at the centre of how the company will create growth and value by operating within planetary boundaries and inspiring positive change for the planet and people.

Through the Development Fund, the company will invest R300 million (of the total R600 million) in agricultural activities that build the capacity of disadvantaged emerging farmers and black-owned businesses; promote regenerative agriculture practices and encourage the adoption of innovation to revitalise local production within South Africa’s agriculture sector.

While in Uganda, the She Feeds the World programme has been a great success and has improved the livelihoods of thousands of people.

The remainder of the investment into the Development Fund, includes R100 million for SMEs within the company’s supply chain and R200 million for education, including scholarships for previously disadvantaged individuals acquiring qualifications or skills that contribute to transforming the South African food system. PepsiCo SSA is also committed to creating a positive value chain by supporting initiatives that improve water efficiency and deliver safe access to water to communities.

Renewable energy

We are taking actions such as adopting more energy-efficient manufacturing processes and shifting to renewable electricity.

Water management

The PepsiCo Foundation has launched a new $1 million programme in partnership with WaterAid to bring safe water to communities in Nigeria. This investment builds on the Foundation’s $350 000 grant to fund water access and sanitation projects in communities across South Africa.

The company is continuing its water stewardship journey, having successfully adopted the Alliance for Water Stewardship Standard at its Parow Plant, in the Western Cape – plans are underway to extend it to more high water risk sites across our footprint.

Expansion of Food for Good

As part of the expansion of Food For Good, PepsiCo’s commitment to advance food security through collaboration in communities where we operate, we are aiming to increase nutritious food access for 50 million people by 2030 as part of our PepsiCo Positive journey, and we will invest $100 million globally as part of the Zero Hunger Pledge.

The expansion of the Food for Good Programme builds on the success of current nutritious food access and positive agriculture programmes as well as assistance provided during the pandemic. This includes the distribution of millions of meals to vulnerable communities impacted by Covid-19 in South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda and Ethiopia.

Some of Food for Good’s programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa include:

Pioneer Foods’ Schools Breakfast Nutrition Programme: The programme provides a nutritious start to the day for more than 33,000 children in 35 schools in some of the most vulnerable communities across 7 provinces

She Feeds the World, a partnership with international humanitarian organisation CARE, to ensure gender equality and economic empowerment for women agriculture workers across the globe: In Uganda, this involves training women on leadership skills, strengthening their access to markets and resources and enabling nutrition improvement to foster sustainable, long-term growth in their communities.
