To participate in International Experience Canada (IEC), your country or territory of citizenship must have a Youth Mobility Agreement (YMA) with Canada.
If you’re eligible to come to Canada to work and travel under International Experience Canada (IEC), you can choose to contact a recognized organization (RO) for more support before and during your experience. They can help you
- find a job
- set up Canadian banking
- plan your travel or accommodations
- secure international health insurance and vaccinations
- find language and intercultural training or experiences
- get help with work and travel problems
- get help in an emergency
ROs are Canadian-based organizations that help youth work and travel internationally through IEC. They can be non-profit, for profit or educational. Most charge a fee for their services.

Each RO offers different services to help build your international experience. ROs might have their own eligibility requirements. IEC participants who use an RO can get 2 more lifetime participations.
In some cases, certain IEC recognized organizations (RO) can help small numbers of youth from non-partner countries to participate in IEC.
Some countries only allow you to participate once. Others allow you to participate twice, but in different categories. Because each country is different, it’s important that you check to see if you’re eligible to apply.
Even if you’re issued an invitation to apply, you can’t participate more times than your country allows. After you submit your application, an officer will assess your eligibility, including your past participations. Make sure you read and understand all the requirements before you submit an application.
An open work permit lets you work for any employer, except for one that either
- is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions, or
- regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
- You can only get an open work permit in specific situations.
Open work permits are not job-specific, so your employer doesn’t need
- a labour market impact assessment from Employment and Social Development Canada
- proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee
Open work permit restrictions
You may have restrictions listed on your open work permit. Restrictions can include things like
- the type of job you can hold
- Example: You may need a medical exam to work in some jobs.
- the location you can work
- Example: If you have an open work permit under the provincial nominee class, you may only be able to work in a specific province.
Languages Canada
The Languages Canada consortium offers youth the opportunity to improve their English or French skills at an accredited language school and work with a Canadian employer. Participation options are available in Montréal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria.
