The internship is located in the Geneva office of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) within the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). Established in 1997, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms.
As a specialized service of the United Nations located within the Department of Peace Operations, UNMAS operates under UN legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council. UNMAS also responds to specific requests for support from the UN Secretary-General or designated official.
The duration of the internship is for six (6) months. This internship is UNPAID in person and full-time, on the United Nations premise working arrangement from Geneva, Switzerland. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote.
The intern will report to the Officer-in-Charge of the UNMAS Geneva office. Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to: – Assists in the organization of the 28th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers (NDM-UN28), a global mine action conference scheduled on 9-11 April 2025 in Geneva;
– Participates in various representation and coordination activities of UNMAS Geneva Office.
– Conducts research and drafts official documents related to the advocacy priorities of UNMAS;
– Draft documents on humanitarian disarmament related to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC), the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities;
– Supports the office’s engagement with the humanitarian and human rights community, including in its role as Global Coordinator of the Mine Action Area of Responsibility (MA AoR) within the Global Protection Cluster and in the OCHA-led Global Cluster Coordinators Group;
– Analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources on assigned topics related to the humanitarian impact of explosive ordnance in conflict and post-conflict settings and mitigation efforts;
– Contributes to the preparation of various written documents, e.g. drafts sections of studies, background papers, summary notes of meetings, reports etc.;
– Attends conferences and meetings of interest to UNMAS, and provides verbal and written briefing notes to colleagues;
– Contributes to the team’s day-to-day tasks as needed, including administration and communications;
– Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
Interested candidates must be pursuing their degree in areas related to this Job Opening. In addition, interested candidates must:
– Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
– Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and,
– Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try to understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.
