A. Background On 8 September 2022, the General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 76/306 to establish a UN Youth Office as a dedicated entity for youth affairs within the Secretariat.

Among its responsibilities, the UN Youth Office leads a flagship initiative called Young Leaders for the SDGs. Launched in 2016 following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the initiative is dedicated to celebrating young leaders and their contributions to sustainable development, as well as engaging them in supporting the UN’s work to catalyse action and advocacy by and for young people toward the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To this end, the UN Youth Office through the Young Leaders for the SDGs Initiative will recognize and convene biannually a group of 17 eminent young people in leadership positions who are uniquely placed to engage young people in the SDGs, accelerate progress and champion youth as agents of change.

The overall objective of the Young Leaders for the SDGs initiative is to support efforts to engage young people in the realization of the SDGs both through strategic opportunities with the UN and through existing initiatives, platforms, and networks. While individual Young Leaders may promote a specific SDG or several Goals at once, they are expected to advocate the Agenda and give special emphasis to its integrated and universal nature.

The Young Leaders represent a cadre of leading young people supporting one another as well as the broader mission of the SDGs. The role of the Young Leaders for the SDGs will be to support the UN in efforts to catalyse a generation of young people who care about the SDGs and are working toward their realization.
