A farmer uses modern agricultural techniques to grow food and cash crops. Their duties include operating and maintaining farm equipment, managing irrigation systems and planning future planting and harvest cycles in a changeable environment.
Farmers use agricultural land and equipment to grow food and other crops, manage animal populations and perform a wide diversity of general farm labor tasks. Their duties include planting and harvesting, managing permanent and seasonal workers and successfully bringing row crops from planting to harvest. Some farmers work for agricultural businesses as traditional employees, while others own their land and work independently. Others have a binding contract arrangement with a distribution network that plays a role in managing the farm’s policies.

Farmer duties and responsibilities
Farmers produce a wide range of crops and animal products under a wide variety of conditions. Most farm jobs require strenuous physical labor, journeyman-level technical work on equipment and a knowledge of computer systems and business management to acquire farm credit and determine market-rate crop prices. Other duties farmers perform include:
- Drafting a farm budget and securing financing for planting, growing and harvest seasons
- Performing general labor outdoors and moving heavy loads
- Operating heavy equipment that may have to be serviced in the field on short notice
- Adhering to USDA and FDA food handling regulations to ensure a food-safe product
- Interacting with suppliers and vendors to manage farm inventory and overhead
- Tending animals in a safe and humane manner, using best practices to humanely slaughter animals and process food products, such as meat, dairy and produce
- Tracking input and output costs to monitor farm efficiency and balance costs
- Plotting out and implementing efficient irrigation and fertilizer systems, tending growing crops and keeping farm buildings and equipment in serviceable condition
- Agricultural sales representativeSells products and services to farms and companies, such as seeds, pesticides, fertilizer, and livestock feed. They may travel to an assigned territory to negotiate orders.
- Agricultural specialistProvides technical assistance to strengthen agricultural subsectors. This includes drafting, monitoring, and managing budgets, and developing relationships with local stakeholders.
- FarmerResponsible for planting, harvesting, crop management, livestock management, and more. Farmers need to have strong work ethics, time management skills, and knowledge of plants and animals. They also need to be able to service and repair farm equipment.
- ForesterConserves, manages, and rehabilitates land. They also monitor wildlife habitats, suppress wildfires, and develop projects to protect the environment.
- Agricultural technicianMay receive training in farm hygiene, sanitation, and production processes. Some technician positions may only require a high school diploma, but may require at least one year of on-the-job training.
- Agronomist
- A scientist who specializes in crop production, soil control, and soil management. They perform experiments to maximize plant nutrients and soil health.
