Construction laborers duties can vary depending on the project and employer. Some common responsibilities include: 

  • Site preparation: Moving obstacles and preparing the site for construction  
  • Material handling: Transporting, loading, and unloading construction materials  
  • Temporary structures: Assembling and disassembling scaffolding and other temporary structures  
  • Digging and trenching: Digging trenches and building foundations  
  • Concrete work: Mixing concrete, putting up formwork, and laying concrete  
  • Steel work: Steel fixing and steel piling  
  • Cleanup: Keeping the site clean and tidy, and filling skips  
  • Equipment operation: Operating light and heavy machinery, such as excavators and dumper trucks  
  • Traffic direction: Directing traffic when necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians  
  • Maintenance: Providing general maintenance of construction equipment  
  • Reporting: Regularly reporting to the site supervisor or foreman  

Construction laborers often work with other professionals, such as bricklayers and carpenters, and need less technical knowledge and training than most other construction job roles. 

Construction Laborer Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
  • Ability to work in all weather.
  • Workers must be punctual and reliable.

Construction Laborer Responsibilities:

  • Operate and care for construction equipment and machines.
  • Help equipment operators, carpenters, and other skilled labor when necessary.
  • Prep construction sites by cleaning obstacles and hazards.
  • Load or unload construction materials.
  • Put together and take apart temporary structures, such as scaffolding.
  • Remove, fill, or compact earth.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Assist craft workers.
  • Ready to learn from on-the-job training when necessary.

Job Description

Load, unload and transport construction materials
Erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalks shoring and barricades
Mix, pour and spread materials
Level earth to fine grade specifications
Clean and pile salvaged materials
Remove rubble and other debris at construction sites
May tend machines or equipment used in construction
Chipping concrete and concrete removal
Mixing, pouring and spreading concrete, asphalt, or gravel
Using powered tools such as Jack-hammers
Digging, spreading and leveling dirt and gravel
Performing a variety of routine, non-machine tasks, such as removing forms from set concrete, painting and other related tasks
Lifting, carrying and holding building materials, tools, and supplies; cleaning tools, equipment, materials, and work areas

Requirements

Education: Completion of secondary school is required.

Experience: Experience is an asset. On-the-job training will be provided.

Work conditions and Physical capabilities: Tight deadlines, repetitive tasks, handling heavy loads, physically demanding, manual dexterity.

Weight Handling: up to 23 kg (50lbs)

Personal suitability: flexibility, reliability, team player

Work Site Environment: Dusty, noisy, dangerous, outdoors, heights

Construction specialization: Roads and bridges

Language: Basic to Intermediate level of English is required.

Important Information: Work schedule is from Monday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm paid lunch. However, flexibility on schedule is required. Work on weekends or evenings may be needed depending on the requirements of the project. Overtime may be required.
