UN Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve nutrition and food security. Its Latin motto, fiat panis, translates to “let there be bread”. It was founded on 16 October 1945.

UN The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development.

UN mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities.

UN The internship is not paid and is offered on a flexible basis (35 hours; working hours to be agreed upon with supervisor; remote or hybrid). To work remotely the applicant shall have full access to a computer with a modern browser and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams) installed to perform the tasks within the scope of the internship. The computer must have basic IT security best practices implemented. At a minimum, the applicant should have:

• Software and security updates for the operating system.

• Built-in operating system’s firewall enabled.

• Password manager enabled to create strong passwords and to secure access to all UN-related resources. There are two available internships at the Agricultural Development and Climate Change Unit at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean Subregional Headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico.

The internship will last up to 6 months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “as-needed” basis. Under the supervision or overall guidance of Economics Officer.

The intern will support the team in the analysis of social, economic, and environmental information and data on food systems, including agriculture, climate change and disasters, and public policy.

Tasks will include:

– Elaborating literature reviews

– Reviewing national documents and data

– Data collection, preparation, processing, and analyses

– Data entry and data base management

– Exchanging findings and ideas with colleagues

– Proposing new or emerging topics

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.

Studies in the areas of economics, public policy, rural development, environmental, innovation or agriculture are desirable. Knowledge of Excel, Python, R or other data science competencies are desirable. Ability to analyse and synthesize information, and identify relevant issues is desirable.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Spanish is a working language of ECLAC. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish or English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
