UNWTO is currently looking for Tourism Statistics Expert/Tourism Satellite Account Compiler to be
included in the Roster of Experts to collaborate on projects related to the Strengthening of Tourism
Statistics Systems and the Development of Tourism Satellite Accounts in French-speaking
UNWTO Member States.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) provides support to Member States to assist them in their
efforts to develop and promote sustainable tourism as an engine for socio-economic growth and inclusive
development leaving no one behind.
To guide Member States in developing a consistent and useful set of basic economic statistical data and
indicators, UNWTO has developed over the past years, and in cooperation with the international
community the two existing United Nations international measurement standards in the area of tourism:
- International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics 2008 (IRTS 2008);
- Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework 2008 (TSA: RMF 2008).
The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) should be viewed as the means to understand tourism as an intrinsic
part of an economy. A TSA, as part of a robust System of Tourism Statistics (STS), can become a reliable
instrument to monitor and to orient public policies on tourism development while serving as a powerful
advocacy tool for National Tourism Administrations (NTAs) to support the cause of tourism.
Within the above context, the Expert will implement projects in tourism statistics and in Tourism Satellite
Accounts in countries, including the following duties, among others: - Attends online meetings and carries out desk research for initial inventory, assessment, and
selection of data sources and formulate a work plan for the implementation of the TSA project; - Raises awareness on the UN statistical standard: Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended
Methodological Framework 2008; - Reviews the System of Tourism Statistics, including all tourism related data sources and all TSA
tables already compiled, verifies data used and processed, and provides recommendations to
improve the System of Tourism Statistics;
Candidates who do not receive any feedback within three months of the deadline should consider
their application as unsuccessful.
Short-listed candidates may be asked to take a competitive exam and/or interview as part of the
final phase of the selection process. These candidates will be contacted directly for this purpose.
There is no guarantee either that the initial contract will be renewed or that a career appointment within UNWTO will subsequently be offered.
