Diesel mechanics, also known as diesel service technicians, inspect, repair and maintain diesel – powered vehicles and machines, such as trucks, forklifts and trailers. Their duties include:

  • Consulting with customers: Reading work orders and determining what work is needed
  • Planning work: Using technical charts and manuals to plan work procedures
  • Inspecting vehicles: Checking brake systems, steering mechanisms, transmissions, engines, and other parts
  • Diagnosing problems: Reading and interpreting diagnostic test results to identify mechanical problems
  • Repairing: Replacing or repairing malfunctioning components, parts, and other mechanical or electrical equipment
  • Performing maintenance: Changing oil, checking fluid levels, and rotating tires
  • Testing: Testing and adjusting mechanical parts after being repaired to ensure proper performance
  • Writing reports: Writing detailed inspection reports and repair plans
  • Presenting reports: Presenting reports and plans to clients for approval
  • Advising clients: Advising clients on repair options and costs
  • Test driving: Completing test drives to make sure the vehicle runs correctly

Diesel mechanics often work on bulldozers, cranes, and dump trucks, and need to have in-depth knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, engines, and all of their working parts. They also need strong analytical skills, familiarity with technology, and the ability to think on their feet.

Diesel mechanics may be exposed to loud noises, vibrations, and fumes from diesel engines, and will usually need to wear protective gear. They may also need to lift, stand, and work in tight and awkward spaces.

While a diploma in diesel mechanics or any automobile related field is not mandatory, employers often prefer candidates with this education.
