MSC was founded by Gianluigi Aponte, a young Italian seaman and former bank teller who had the courage and foresight to purchase his first ship, Patricia, in 1970. He acquired an even bigger vessel in 1971, which he named after his wife, Rafaela, followed by the carrier, Ilse, in 1973.

Training before boarding
Pre-boarding training is essential to prepare you for life aboard and complements STCW2010 certification, which you will need to obtain yourself. Coming soon, we’ll be launching our new MSC Cruises Academies, where you’ll receive 1 week’s training in an academy located in your own country. This training will equip you with all the necessary skills and help you feel confident in your role before boarding.
In collaboration with Regione Liguria, the Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile in Genoa and the Accademia del Turismo in a beautifully renovated school in Lavagna (Italy), MSC Cruises runs training courses for people interested in a career on-board in Entertainment, Guest Relation, Shore Excursion, and other hotel departments.

That’s why we’ll offer you many training classes once aboard, designed to improve your ship and guest relations knowledge, while also showing you how to navigate your way through the career path that’s best for you.
Because safety is so important on ships, you’ll also take part in regular Crew emergency exercises. Emergency exercises for Guests are conducted after leaving every embarkation port, and if you have a safety assignment during these exercises, you will take part. Our goal in these exercises is to ensure we are always prepared and to learn to never underestimate the importance of safety.
Languages
English is our main language requirement. MSC Cruises has set a minimum ‘entry level’ English standard of B1 on the Common European Framework language evaluation system.
Once you are aboard we can offer you extra lessons to make you feel more comfortable with your skills. Other highly-desired languages are Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Works closely with the Chief Engineer to ensure that all maintenance is completed efficiently and thoroughly;
• Maintains regular contact with the Hotel Director and Sanitation Officer in order to ensure technical compliance with international sanitation requirements;
• Works in close cooperation with Safety Officer to ensure the proper maintenance and outstanding mechanical conditions of all the safety equipment and system aboard the vessel;
• Is fully responsible for the operation of the engine room and any maintenance of machinery on board when deputising for the Chief Engineer;
• Ensures work in progress is completed in line with internal standard procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS (skills, competencies, experience)
• Fluent English oral and written. Any additional European language is considered an advantage (Italian, Portuguese, German, Spanish and French);
• Master’s degree or Polytechnic degree of technical ship operations;
• Certificate of Competency IMO III/2 + passengers ship familiarisation;
• Previous experience in both mechanical and electrical engineering as well as experience in international sanitation requirements;
• Stress tolerance;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Problem solving;
• Excellent team management abilities;
• A recognised medical certification is required before starting to work on board.
VISA REQUIREMENTS (if any)
• Possess a valid passport and when possible a seaman book copy.
