Implats, or Impala Platinum Holdings Limited, is a leading producer of platinum and platinum group metals (PGMs). The company’s history began in 1966 when Union Corporation established a platinum mine in Rustenburg, South Africa, with a capacity of 100,000 ounces per year. 

Implats in 1968 was created as a subsidiary of Union Corporation and entered into an agreement with the Bafokeng tribe to lease 12,000 hectares of land for prospecting. The first blast took place on June 3, 1967, and production began on July 22, 1969.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To implement, evaluate, coordinate, and manage occupational hygiene programmes on the mine to meet legal compliance and a safe and healthy working environment, thereby minimizing the Mines risk of litigation and adverse publicity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Registration with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) on Occupational Hygienist level and Chamber of Mines (CoM) Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (MEC); or
  • CoM Certificate in MEC and registered with the Mine Ventilation Society on Associate Level is essential
  • Certificate of competency in Occupational Hygiene or relevant field will be advantageous.
  • At least 5 to 7 years’ experience in Occupational Hygiene/Mine Ventilation is essential or
  • At least 2 years’ experience in Mining is essential.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office packages) is essential.
  • Other relevant certificate of competency in Occupational Hygiene or relevant field will be advantageous.
  • Valid Medical Certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain one is essential.

  • Good verbal communication and technical reporting writing skills is essential.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Identify conditions in the workplace that may cause illness or adverse health effects to persons, assess occupational health risks due to identified hazards, evaluate those risks, recommend control measures to mitigate such risk
  • Audit compliance to Occupational Hygiene Standards
  • Trend analysis of occupational exposure data and linkage of data to occupational groups
  • Occupational Hygiene objectives and targets
  • Education and training of employees on occupational health hazards and risks
  • Incident investigation
  • Mandatory codes of practice
  • Occupational Hygiene standards
  • Manage Occupational hygiene programmes.
  • Interprets mine strategies, guidelines and standards into systems and procedures.
  • Interpret legislation.
  • Adoption and Implementation of Leading Practices
  • Statutory Reporting
